MUMIA ABU-JAMAL 
Former journalist and Black Panther member, Mumia Abu-Jamal is currently fighting a death sentence for the 1981 slaying of a white Philadelphia police officer. According to Abu-Jamal and his supporters, the former National Association of Black Journalists' Philadelphia president was unjustly convicted of the killing and was railroaded in the preceding trial.
Many supporters point to Abu-Jamal's association with MOVE, a community group that was involved in a deadly clash with police in 1978. They also cite the move by trial judge Albert Sabo to allow prosecutor Joseph McGill to question Abu-Jamal about a statement he had made more than 10 years earlier as a 16-year-old member of the Black Panthers.
