AFRO Charities Inc
The Afro-American Newspapers established
AFRO-Charities Inc. as a 501-C3 nonprofit
organization in 1963. Its purpose is
to uplift the African-American community
through programs that promote unity,
dignity and ultimately independence.
Through Afro-Charity programs such
as AFRO-Clean Block, local residents
become organized in accessing city
and government resources to create
and maintain clean neighborhoods. AFRO-Charities
seeks the contributions of individual
and corporate supporters to assist
in providing tools and incentives to
complement their clean-up efforts.
Nearly 100 communities, representing
dozens of blocks register each year
for this program.
During the holiday season, AFRO-Charities
coordinates its AFRO-Mrs. Santa Program
to provide clothes, food and toys to
less fortunate families. To date, more
than 10,000 families have been helped
through the Mrs. Santa Program.
AFRO-Charities coordinates fundraising
efforts year-round to help supports
its programs and help benefit the thousands
of people that have come to depend
on its service. Using the Afro-American
Newspapers as a major source to promote
its outreach, the foundation is quickly
rising as one of the region's hardest
working and most respected African-American
Charitable organizations.
In the near future, AFRO-Charities
looks to incorporate an annual scholarship
project into its family of programs.
Already, the Afro-American Newspapers
reaches out to schools to promote literacy
during black history month. Both the
paper and the foundation seek to provide
a more permanent educational benefit.
Through AFRO-Charities, this goal can
be accomplished.
