Bolt Defends 200-meter Crown, Wins Fifth Total Gold Medal

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won gold in the 200-meter dash on Aug. 9, becoming the first man to ever win back-to-back Olympic Gold medals in both the 100- and 200-meter races.

Bolt’s time of 19.32 seconds beat out Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake, who finished just .012 seconds behind for silver. Warren Weir, also of the Jamaican National team, finished third at 19.84 seconds for the bronze.

American sprinter Aries Merritt finished in fourth place at 19.90 seconds.

After successfully defending his title as the world’s fastest man, Bolt took his customary victory lap, posing and pointing at the crown. Blake and Weir joined Bolt on the victory lap, draping the Jamaican flag over their shoulders.

Bolt, 25, now has five career Olympic gold medals, two won in the 100-meter, two in the 200-meter and a fifth won in the 4×100-meter relay. He’ll have a chance to win his sixth Olympic gold medal as a member of Jamaica’s 4×100-meter team on Aug. 10.
