Who Are the Baga?

The Baga live along the the marshy Atlantic coastline of Guinea, which is found in Western Africa. The coastline is broken up by numerous rivers and inlets. These natural boundaries have separated the Baga into five 'dialect groups.'

Dialect groups are groups of people who speak a language that is very similar, but not exactly the same. The Baga dialect groups are known as the Baga Mandori, the Baga Sitemu, the Baga Kakissa, the Baga Koba, and the Baga Kalum.

They are all separated from each other, but they have a lot in common. The reason they are so similar to each other is that they were once one people a long time ago. They lived in a different part of Africa, known as Fouta Djallon. When they moved to the coastal area, they began to split up and their language and culture became just a little bit different from each other.

Altogether, there are only about 35,000 to 40,000 Baga people.
