Phyllis Audrey Wilson
Artist Statement
My art perceptions are informed by African, African American, and Western art impulses, themes, and traditions. Through my work, I seek to create a space where these elements can reside in an "altar," where I may "realize" or "process" these issues. I am an American woman born of African descent. The blending of these different traditions is a primary concern of my aesthetic because I am a contemporary manifestation of this hybridization
Phyllis Wilson is a native New Yorker who now resides in Baltimore. She has received a BA in History from Duke University, a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Virginia Commonwealth University, and a MFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute, College of Art where she has taught for two years in the Foundation Department.
