Susan WintersWinters has made six trips to South Africa since 1988 where she documented the spirit of the grassroots people as South Africa underwent extraordinary changes from the oppression of apartheid to a new democratic government. She documented daily life, community building projects and grassroots anti-apartheid activities in the black townships near Cape Town and the rural villages in the homelands of the Eastern Cape. The project was funded by various foundations in the United States and Europe. Some of her photographs from South Africa won the Robert F. Kennedy Award in 1994.
These photos are arranged in order to depict South Africa's evolution from oppression to freedom. Susan Winters has provided each image with a bit of explanatory text to lend background and context to this powerful photo documentary.

Prints of these photos are available for sale through the artist. All proceeds will go towards benefitting AIDS education in Africa.
