Eddie Murphy's version of his much publicized encounter with an alleged prostitute is . . .

Response: Eddie Murphy is a very successful actor, comedian and film entrepreneur. And he is African American. He is not a minister, judge, teacher, or other professional expected to uphold moral standards. But that doesnot mean he did anything illegal. The reported statement of his transvestite passenger indicates that Murphy asked a lot of questions about his/her lifestyle. It is quite possible that Murphy was in fact conducting research for a future movie or comic routine, or just trying to learn more about the human condition. But no matter what his purpose, all that he did was give someone a ride in his car. Talk about guilt by association, huh! I hope we all learned a lesson about this occurrence. Murphy was not charged with anything by the police. The sensationalist supermarket tabloids had a field day capitalizing on Murphy's fame. With Murphy's picture on the front page for ANY reason, more people would buy a copy of the paper. It is just as possible that Murphy was telling the TRUTH as that the innuendos of the tabloids were facts. When will we learn to be loyal to our sisters and brothers when attempts are made, without basis, to besmirch their reputations?

Response: The brother is human, he may have made a mistake, or maybe just got overly curious. The fact is, Eddie doesn't have to answer to the world(Nat'l Enquirer, you, your neighbor, etc.). Maybe he has to reconcile his actions/lack thereof with Nicole & God a nmaybe, but not for you & I. Have we even forgot a more questionable issue? Why? If he didn't solicit or sex this "cross dresser", and diddn't break any other laws, WHY???Why was he stopped? Was it because he was a supscious looking black man, or perhaps a negro driving an expensive automobile? Why? I think it is unfortunate that we all hop on the first opportunity (every opportunity) to slam our brothers and sisters who are trying to make it to the top in this world (and taking quite a few of us with them)? Look at the crap that we have supported (through reading/discussing/ buying Globes, Enquirers etc.) about people like Toni Braxton and Whitney being either lesbians, sluts, fools for men etc. It is their life, and their entitled to it. We as a people should work on righting the wrongs in our own lives, families, communities to help make us stronger as a collective race.

Response: MY ONLY COMMENT IS WHY DID HE GET OFF WITH A TALKING TO BY THE POLICE AND THE HIS COMPANION HAD TO GO TO JAIL. IF 1 WAS INNOCENT THE OTHER SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

Response: Brother Ed like many men of color needs to watch his behavior; on and off the silver screen. He is blessed with the "gift" of laughter. Brings it to the "house and family" so to speak, with adventure and humor. He probably knew the "queen" from his days on the street or had business of some nature that is actually none of our business. Let's hope his spouse wasn't offended.

Response: Leave the Brother alone! Eddie Murphy is a stand up guy who supports the African American community. He hires MANY Blacks to work on his movies, contributes to charities and is a fine example of a Black man with his priorities in order. Remember, it was he who stood up at the Academy Awards as a presenter and said that Blacks will no longer ride in the back of the bus when it comes to entertainment and representation in the media. Get off his back!!!!!

Response: First of all what in the world was he out there by his self for any way? When he comes to the Bay Area he is surrounded with people So nobody can get close to him, he is afraid of gays so how was he not afraid then. I guess if we are waiting for him to tell on his self we might have a long wait. So let it go.

Response: We are supposed to be a land of laws. The man is innocent until he is proved guilty. Besides, who cares?

Response: I'll still support the actor. He and his wife do need to discuss what actually happened versus what the media reported and TOGETHER determine what they need to do to move on.

Response: I think the man was doing some research for his new movie. Give the man a break! especially since he wasn't really caught doing anything.

Response: I think it was business as usual for Eddie. Lucky for him he was not caught in the act of doing anything and will most likely survive this one.

Name: Janet
Email: jgreene@hrsa.dhhs.gov
Response: I really think it is unfortunate, especially for his family. The more he tries to explain the worse it gets. I know it has broken down the trust that his wife had with him. Technically he has done nothing wrong. The situation that he put himself in is just unexplainable.

Response: Our culture has sunk to dealing with sensationalism and negatives. Eddie Murphy's escapade was no more than what happens everyday in this society, and should not be given the news media coverage nor our personal attention. Our minds should be focused on resolving some of the more important problems which pledge our community, such as - Unity and the family. How can we overcome the drugs, violence, racism and others factors which are destroying our black communities. It is an awful shame that we allow ourselves to be sidetracked by these bizaare issues. The easiest way to stop a man from achieving is to knock him off his course. Let's get back on the right course and away from the slave mentality of hopelessness. Lets start discussing positive way we can build leadership, morales, dencency, and honesty in our black community.

Response: I'm sure Eddie's wife has more of an idea of the real truth than I, and I'm sure that she is capable of dealing with it in an appropriate manner. His actions don't directly affect me or my family as Eddie has never been considered a role model here, just an entertainer who could have done better. Just to bad he chooses to support an activity that brings discredit to all who come in contact with it. Some of those young runaways in L.A. probably could have use an Eddie Murphy handout.

Response: Most of these responses " down for the brotha " that is what is wrong today , we teach kids that as long as the man is black he's alright, well call a jerk a jerk even if he is black

Response: I know that it is not for us to judge, so instead I will only comment. I don't know and could care less if it is true or not first of all. My only comment is to all those who are repeatedly caught in this type of situation. My motto is if you can't let anyone see you do it, then you probably shouldn't be doing it. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. I think it is sad that he did not have enough common sense to think of his wife before he commited this "selfless act of charity"? I know that no matter if one has the finest man or woman as their mate, it is only that persons morals and values that keep them completly faithful to their mates. I can understand Eddie Murphy being framed by the Star when his wife knew he was with her the whole time, but to say "Oops, I got caught with a cross dresser" is a little bit harder to swallow. Next time Eddie decides to go for a drive between the hours of sunset and sunrise he better stay in his own neighborhood. People need to stop thinking that when someone does something like this they are cheating on their wife or husband, because they are not. Eddie just cheated himself out of a wonderful life time relationship with a woman that had his kids and stood by him for years until he married her, and he cheated himself out of seeing his children grow up in the unity of a real family. Most of all he cheated his children and if he had a relationship with the Lord, he cheated that. I feel sorry for him, the grass always looks greener on the other side, until you hop the fence and see the poop! Just think, Eddie could be innocent, but because he did not put his family first he may soon be with out one. This is an excellent lesson for all of those that look up to him, hopefully some people will learn that their family's happiness, well being, and togetherness in the long run is much more important than any selfish desire that they may have. People in our communities should think about that before they pick up a gun, a pipe, or go to bed and have a baby with some boy named Pookie. We are always screaming "Somebody help us!" or "What is wrong with our neighborhood?" The problem is that we are not putting family first or long term goals, but we are indulging in self gratification and quick fix's. We need to tackle ourselves, and begin to take the blame for where we have helped to put ourselves. There is no one to blame this point on for Eddie, but himself.

Response: His response is hard to believe. He said he loves his wife and children yet he roams around at night "helping" street women. Yeah, he helps them. If his wife falls for this one she is beyond "help."

Name: Jimmy Lateef Vaughan
Email: jvaughan@ctia.org
Response: .....almost unbelievable. I say 'almost', because I want to give the brotha the benefit of doubt. If Eddie was/is so concerned, I'm sure that he could have found a safer, more effective way to help prostitutes than driving around late at night, picking them up, and giving them rides 'home'. C'mon Brah.

Name: Solomon Landers
Email: Numberup@worldnet.att.net
Response: HIS version. And I suppose he is innocent until proven guilty. Haven given the brotha his props, I must say that I'm getting a bit jaded with these folks who "have it all" being caught in stupid situations. Granted, we're all human and make mistakes, but some of this stuff is just plain DUMB. What about the embarrassment caused to the wives, the children, to those who considered people like Eddie to be "role models"? You see them smiling on the covers of Ebony and Jet one week, and disgraced on the covers of the National Enquirer the next. Whatever happened to responsibility, or just plain common sense and discretion???

Response: Excuse the pun, but I think Eddie was caught with his pants down. The story just ain't adding up. Normally I'm down for a brother, but this one just does not sound right to me. O.K.- so he wanted to be a good samaritan. That's good, but I'm not buying the "I was restless...and needed to drive around" excuse. If no one else knows the real deal, be sure the sisters do. We've heard some of these same lame explanations before. What makes this so bad is that he's creeping around with RuPaul want-to-be's. I just feel sorry for his wife and kids.

Response: I believe Eddie!!! Everybody else can go to hell because y'all jealous and treacherous in your hearts!!! If he was doing ANYTHING wrong, he would have been arrested. Point blank: Eddie was helping someone and his only mistake was being a Black man in America!!!!!
