Week of 11/14/97:
Was Chris Spencer's replacement by Sinbad on Vibe TV a good move?
Name: jm Email: jmonkman@fm.ucsf.edu Response:
Whoa!...almost thought the revolution won't be televised or discussed. It's 11:50, waiting for Gill Scott-Heron, and no show...well, at least Sinbad sat down to rap for a few minutes at the end...otherwise, tonights show's just pap...Sinbad talks of shedding light...bring him on early and shine the light...a poet laureate can help us all
Name: Nexus Vision Email: nexus_vision@hotmail.com Response:
Great move and look at the reasons why ...
Sinbad is popular...he crosses 3 generations,
he's charming, witty, and classy...
He's proud of black musicians and music
and loves black colleges....
Maybe he should run for other things...
Name: Leonard Email: leonard@detrotbest.net Response:
Yep, it was a good move...if it was my TV station, I would have replaced that "dead fish" with almost no ratings, a long time ago.
Name: simon Email: simonzealot@hotmail.com Response:
it appeared that Chris was not quite ready for such a task, as hosting the vibe show. But at least he can add it to his resume as being the first. Sinbad is cool, but his skits get a little long. If they decide to boot sinbad, I would be more then glad to take on the role.
Name: D.Jordan Email: WhiteNikes@aol.com Response:
If you want a successful talk show, it needs to be host driven not supported by the guests. If the host isn't entertaining his guests won't be either. Leno and Letterman are two hosts that all aspiring young hosts could learn from , white or black.
Name: Email: bnell@pacbell.net Response:
If it is destiny that Chris be replaced then so it
is, however, let's support our brothers in whatever positive endeavors they choose to pursue.
I realize we're free to speak and do as we wish. Yet, we must not forget compassion.
Chris will develop the skills he needs when it is time.
Only one knows this. All you spiritually based people
will know what I mean.
Focus on the positive.
I wish both Sinbad and Chris success.
Peace!

I see a big contradiction here. october 17, 1997, Della Reese and Gladys Knight was on the Vibe program, and they had only good things to say about Chris Spencer. Also, his mother was there expressing her joy, and pride. Gladys said, "I'm proud of you. We must let each other know when we're doing things the right way...I want to say it in front of your audience__you're doing a wonderful job and i'm proud of you!!!!! A fine upstanding young man, look at him...he looks good. You'are wonderful...handsome young man. Brother i'm so proud of you!!" When two "Divas" give-it-up to you like that it's, "Take it to the bank" time. These African-American sisters praised Mr. Spencer publicly, and a few days later he's shot-down. For what reason?????
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Sinbad is gettin' over using Arsenio's method of operation to make his mark on VIBE. Everything Sinbad is doing on Vibe, Arsenio, did on the "Arsenio Hall show." Sinbad has stolen Arsinio's THUNDER!!! I take no sides here, I just call them as I see them. Facts, just the facts mam. It's up to you to make your determination...I'M OUT. "Truism is real."
Name: Pooh Email: nshelby109@aol.com Response:
I felt that he was trying to hard. Sinbad has much more expierence making him a better host. Why is Vibe and Keenan on at the same time? That makes me mad.
Name: Wayne Email: Response:
YES, that was the best move, To keep the show alive.
Name: Email: kcspring@eden.rutgers.edu Response:
Yes, I do think that the removal of Chris Spencer was a good one.
To me, All he ever did was flirt with the girls also he did not have any interesting people on his show.
I think Sinbad is really funny and really does a good job hosting.
I hope he stays on the show for a lot of seasons.
Name: Kevin Johnson Email: KRAYJSR@aol.com Response:
I think all talk shows should be lead by people with morals.....When are we going to wake up and get away from the foolishess. Look at out communities and our youth. I think that it does not matter who leads the show. I think it is all about that evil dollar.
Name: Cee Baker Email: entbaker@snet.net Response:
Sinbad is cool as a comedian. As a host for VIBE he
leaves a lot to be desired. Spencer is young and coming
on strong. You could tell he had "butterflies" in
the first few shows but he was definitely "growing
into the role". Gladys Knight and Della Reese "hit
the nail on the head" when they complimented the
brother on doing a fine job. Spencer gave the stars
their "propers". Sinbad is more into promoting Sinbad.
If they wanted a comedian they should have gotten
Eddie Murphy. Spencer may have had timing problems
due to inexperience. Time takes care of those things.
The audience was warming up to him.
Name: Ede Email: etaylor@artlover.com Response:
I think that replacing Chris Spencer was an excellent idea. Chris seemed far too inexperienced and unknown to hold that type of position. He often lost control of the conversation and would openly 'hit' on the female guests. Conversely, I'm not sure what's going on with Sinbad. It's too much of him and his little skits. You barely see/hear the guests. He has excellent interation with the guests when they are on stage but the show has evolved into "The Sinbad Show." At the rate it's going, the show will be cancelled, even with Quincy Jones as director, without drastic improvements.
Name: Sakina Camp Email: smcamp@acsu.buffalo.edu Response:
I think that replacing Chris Spencer with Sinbad was a good move for Vibe. I think Chris Spencer was trying too hard to be funny and to fit in with the stars. I also believe that the ratings will increase dramatically. This change was long awaited, and everyone is happy with Sinbad.
Name: fUJIN4 Email: FUJIN4@MAIL.COM Response:
It is unfortunate that Chris Spencer had to be replaced on the show.
I am enjoying watching Sinbad. His Birthday party and today's 70'
party show was VERY GOOD!!!!!!
Name: Sonja Email: baxter.sonja@usa.net Response:
It was a MUCH needed 'move'. Chris Spencer was the
worst host ever. I wonder who was his competition
when he was up for this gig. I can't imagine anyone worse
than him.
I think Sinbad was an excellent replacement. He's a
natural people person and entertainer.
Name: Kahlil Email: kgc2n@virginia.edu Response:
ANYONE would have been a better host for Vibe than Chris Spencer, but Sinbad was an excellent choice for the above-mentioned reasons. Spencer was ignorant of 'timing' while VISIBLY reading his monologue jokes; his decorum on the show was crude; he, in classic Arsenio fashion, began coming on to his female guests; he was oblivious to the fact that his guests were there to promote their projects, not listen to his buffoonery; his transitions from conversation to commercial, or guest to guest, or discussion subject transition in general...sucked. Forget the diplomacy: the brother was ignorant.
Name: Karen Email: Ldys1st@aol.com Response:
I feel that it was a good decision to choose Sinbad as the host. No disrespect to Chris, he seem to be a good host, but of course now a days that doesn't pay the bills. Sinbad is definitely a people person and it seems like it comes from his heart. And he doesn't have to put on a facade to pretend. Sinbad is a natural, and everyone likes him. And thats what counts in show business, its tough for newbies to try to maintain an on-going program and recieve good ratings at the same time.
Name: CAD Email: blkcat411@aol.com Response:
Definitely!..That show was dying a slow agonizing death before Sinbad took over.
Chris is probably a very nice person, but
he was unable to have the strength of
presence to carry such a high profile show.
And futhermore, I think Keenan ought to turn his show over to Damon. Well that's my two cents.
Peace & Love
Name: Email: VJO1 Response:
I FEEL AS THOUGH THE REPLACEMENT WAS A GOOD IDEA. UNFORTUNATELY, CHRIS' INEXPERIENCE AND YOUTH WORKED AGAINST HIM IN THIS CASE. IT APPEARED TO ME AS THOUGH HE WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE SHOW. THERE WERE SEVERAL INCIDENCES WHERE HE MISCALCULATED TIME AND WAS UNABLE TO "PLUG" THE GUEST'S PROGRAM, RECORD...ETC. HOWEVER, MOST UNFORTUNATE, WAS THE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR WITH THE FEMALE GUEST. VIBE, I DO NOT BELIEVE, IS THE PLACE TO "GET YOUR GROOVE ON!" SINBAD ON THE OTHER HAND MAKES ME PROUD. LONG LIVE VIBE!!
Name: Email: Itchibon@webtv.net Response:
I believe it could've been an embarrassing situation for Chris--unless he wanted to be replaced! There could have been a hidden reason behind this move; consequently, the public is not privy to the complete story. Remember, this is still a new program. Why didn't they choose Sinbad in the beginning?? I would like to know the _REAL_ STOry...!!!
Itchibon...Truth..Seekur...!!
Name: Email: raj9325@aol.com Response:
The reasonings behind the move was the $, Sinbad will draw more viewers. This will in turn cause the advertising commercials to ask for more $$ and so on . It's all about the $$$$.
Name: WhatHappened? Email: bradfo43@ccvax.mmc.edu Response:
NO! In fact, I have stopped watching the show because of the replacement. Sinbad was good on Showtime at the Apollo, and his Summer Jams on HBO are "live", and the accompanying comedy special this year was hilarious, but I kind of liked the New Jack Brother on Vibe, and was just starting to get used to him. I thought that Quincy Jones should have went ahead and put Arsenio on as the host, since he boasted that the show was supposed to pick up where Arsenio left off. If not Arsenio, then why not Martin Lawrence, now that his tv show is cancelled? So he put the NewJack on, and sure, he was kind of awkward and corny at first, but he seemed to be growing into the position quite well, I think. Plus he was fine as all hell, and that always helps.(smile) Anyway, I missed like two or three days of watching the show, and when I turned it on again, Sinbad was on there talking about, "Second day...I'm back!" I was like, 'Second day? Back for WHAT? What happened to the other guy?' I still don't know the full story behind THAT one.
Name: Email: syndic@webtv.net Response:
I don't comprehend what's implied by "good-move" your question borders on ambiguity. If there's a mystery here--I must've missed it. I am unaware of any misbehavior or lack of ability of Spencer's to host the "Vibe program." Maybe they should reverse the change. Sinbad must have Mexican jumpin' beans in the "pantalones" the way he hops around the stage. He's trying too hard to please, and he shouldn't suck up to people; begging is pitiful!!!!!
Name: tonya Email: Response:
I'm glad they made the change to Sinbad. Who was that guy anyway? I think a lot more poeple will watch the show now that the host has been changed. they made a good move.
Name: dimples Email: oduroer@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu Response:
Yes, I think that Sinbad is a good replacement for the previous host. Because Sinbad has a naturally open and funny character that appeals to the crowd.
Name: cosette Email: marjfloyd@webtv. Response:
I think it was an excellent choice! Sinbad is
funny and very comfortable with the audience and
the guests. The show needed some "perking up."
It was kind of flat with the last host. Sinbad
may save the vibe pr.
