This
week's
topic:
Now that former Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy has been totally acquitted by a jury on all corruption charges, should the government be obligated to reimburse him for enduring this protracted ordeal which has produced nothing but nevertheless ruined his career?

Response: He most certainly should be paid handomely for his troubles. And, his acquittal is actually bittersweet after all this time of dragging him through the "mud". In addition, something must be done about this 'independent counsel' madness where millions of our money can't be spent on such witch-hunts. This much money is forbidden if counsel was not independent with no budget.

Response: Yes, I feel he should be reimbursed and then some. I don't feel he should have to work another day of his life unless he wants to. It's a disgrace to carry Mr. Espy throught this type of ordeal. Had this been a caucasian man or woman, we would have never heard about it.

Response: No! Mike Espy is young, His life is ahead of him and to spend time now engaging in a long battle with the federal government may not be to his best advantage. This was a "witch hunt" and he would do well to let his friends im high places know that he expects some compensation for time and money lost. I would like to see him run again for Congress and come back to D.C to lead the fight to clean up this mess about independent counsels.

Response: Just another hi-tech lynching by the judicial system. The politics of public opinion coup's have reached an epic proportion and Mr. Espy should be not only vindicated publicly, but fairly compensated for this issue.

Response: Sure, I believe that he, along with a host of other African Americans should be compensated/reinbursted for the ills that has been placed upon them, as being made "Scape Goats" for the many games that are being played by our opposite hue. We better awaken ourselves, and be adorned with the Armour that God has given us. For the games aren't just being played on Capitol Hill, but in our own communities...POLITICALLY. HOTEP

Response: I am quite sure the the Government of these United States will never admit that they have made a mistake or wronged an African-American since they never have. It does, however, continue to amaze me how the economy of this country revolves around the African as it has since its inception. Much money was expended for and many people were paid for this investigation and the hearings of which most of it went to non-African-Americans. No matter what year it is, no matter how many laws are written, no matter how much is forgiven, a wild beast will always be a wild beast. We must stop thinking that the white man is going to be anything other than what he has proven himself to be at all other times and places in the history of the world. Mr. Espy could have ,on the other hand, been shot as was Ron Brown, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Medger Evers, just to list a few of those whose names we recogonize. Mr. Espy is after all and Aftican-American and he will survive. We work for our people best when we are unknown to the white world. His efforts, contacts and knowledge are still required in the African-American world.

Response: It is a shame the way the establishment goes after the Black politician. Not only should Mr. Espy be compensated he shoulds be reinstated to some position in government so he can make a decent living. They owe him. I will be glad when the Republican Party learns the "witch hunts" are not the American way.

Response: I think that it's disgusting that still in this day of age that the goverment can get away with ruining a man's life. I thought that this was an enlightend society then things like this make me think. Anyways alot alegations had to do with the fact that he was african. He definately deserves to get reinburstment for the goverments (fill in the blank) up. Will he see it, huh, what do you think?

Response: Though I am not absolutely sure but legally I don't think the government has to do a thing should they yea they should the question is will they which I doubt. Black white grey or green the cost is too high. And by giving some type of restitution they would be admitting an error on their part. This will never happen.

Response: The govt. should reimburse a person that is acquitted of charges. I thought that was the way the system worked. I'm sure he has a tremendous legal bill. Maybe that's what some devious person wants to do, destroy you professionally o r economically.

Response: WELL FOR ONE, IF YOU TAKE AWAY A MAN'S LIVELY- HOOD. THE NHE SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR IT, I MEAN IT IS ONLY FAIR. WHETHER GUILTY OR NOT. THE POINT WAS THAT WE WASTED MONEY THAT COULD HAVE USED TO REBUILD A COMMUNITY TO TRY TO JUDGE A MAN. ANOTHER UNNECESSARY WASTE OF MUCH NEEDED MONEY. SO I ASK YOU WHICH ONEIS MORE IMPORTANT TRYING TO JUDGE SOMEONE OR GETTING OUR HUNGRY HOMELES PEOPLE OFF THE STREET???

Response: This issue is beyond race or retribution. The issue is why were charges brought against him in the first place. The is story from the Dixie Humingbirds that I love. They were traveling down south in the 50's and were stopped because their headlights were to bright. Sometimes I feel that everything is against the law and it's just a matter of who gets to enforce the law, who they enforce it on and how hard they enforce it. For decades, if not centuries, politicains have accepted gifts. Now when a Democrat/Negro is in power, charges are brought. Our President is charged with lying over sex. The issue is not who will pay the President back for Whitewater or Epsy for Superbowl tickets. The issue is who's bringing these charges and how long before all Americans are charged for sex, Super Bowl tickets and bright headlights.

Response: I TRULY THINK THE GOVERMENT SHOULD REIMBURST MIKE ESPY, THEY ARE SO QUICK TO RUSH TO JUDGEMENT AND WASTE OUR TAX DOLLARS ON SOME BS WITH ALL ILLS OF THIS COUNTRY,THE HOMELESS,THE CRIME, THE VIOLENCE,THE UNEMPOYED,THE HOMELESS, MILLIONS UPON MILLONS ARE WASTED EACH YEAR ON LIKE I SAID (B S)

Submit Date: 5 DEC 1998

Response: This issue is beyond race or retribution. The issue is why was he prosecuted in the first place. The Dixie Humingbirds have a story that I love. They say they were traveling down south one day in the fifty's and were pulled over because their headlights were too bright. Why is Epsy being punished for accepting common gifts? Why is Clinton being punished for the common fruits of power enjoyed by all successful people, male and female? Is it true that everything is against the Law and it's just a matter of who gets to enforce the Law, how hard they enforce it and who they enforce it on? So Sex, Super Bowl Tickets and Bright Lights are illegal. The question is "Is this the America in which you wish to live?"
