WHO:             Comptroller Peter Franchot

Local and state officials

WHAT:          Comptroller Peter Franchot will visit Oxford Friday to present proclamations to the Oxford Museum as it observes its 50th anniversary year and to the Masthead at Pier Street for its fine seafood cuisine and longtime commitment of its owners to the community.

The Oxford Museum was founded in 1964 by a group of residents dedicated to preserving and displaying Oxford’s 300-plus years of Colonial, Civil War and Maritime history. Located in the center of town, the museum displays a diverse and growing collection of artifacts and memorabilia. From 17 members when it was founded, membership has grown to more than 400 with nearly 4,000 visitors annually. The Masthead opened in 2004 after renovation from damage of Hurricane Isabel. Gwen Fox Gordon and Wendy Palmer, who started the Masthead in 1991 on Mill Street, brought the name back to life at the Pier Street location. They also own the popular Latitude 38 in Oxford.

The Comptroller will finish his day in style with a ride across the beautiful Tred Avon River aboard on the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry. Tom and Judy Bixler, ferry captains and owners, purchased the ferry in 2002. Founded in 1683, the ferry will commemorate its 331st birthday in November.
