Comptroller to Stroll DPI’s 65th Delmarva Chicken Festival; Present Proclamation to D-Day Veteran

WHAT:          Comptroller Franchot will visit one of the Eastern Shore’s highlights of summer – the Delmarva Poultry Industry’s 65thannual and final Delmarva Chicken Festival being held Friday and Saturday at the Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park near Centreville. On Friday afternoon, the Comptroller will stroll among the exhibits, historical poultry displays, car show, farmers’ market, artists and crafters, commercial vendors and non-profit exhibits and watch children having fun in special activities. He also will see and smell the mouth-watering aroma of crispy fried chicken being browned in the Giant Fry Pan. Along the way, he will talk to DPI officials, farmers and festival goers.

Afterward, the Comptroller will travel to the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department to present a proclamation honoring James ”Jimmy” F. Ewing Sr., a World War II veteran and life-long resident of Kent Island, who landed on Normandy on D-Day. Ewing, 91, was a member of the U.S. Army 115th Infantry that was in the second wave of soldiers to land at Omaha Beach, Normandy, 70 years ago.  Mr. Ewing, who served four years in the Army, was shot in the back but managed to survive because of a small Bible given to him by his mother that he carried in his chest pocket. He earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for helping care for a comrade.
