Alicia Keys, Dionne Warwick to be Honored at BET’s “Black Girls Rock”

Legendary singer Dionne Warwick and R&B songstress Alicia Keys will be honored at BET’s annual “Black Girls Rock,” a television special saluting women of color.

According to a news release, Warwick will receive the “Living Legend” award, while Keys will receive the “Rock Star" award. Other women set to be honored include actress Kerry Washington, magazine editor Susan Taylor and human rights activist, Dr. Hawa Abdi.

“It’s truly an honor to recognize our celebrants who have accomplishments in a wide variety of fields. Look for some very special performances from an array of genres,” Stephen Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials for BET, said in a statement.

The two-hour event will include appearances and performances from Keys, Brandy, Ciara and India.Arie among many others.

Launched in 2010, “Black Girls Rock” is an annual show that celebrates the nonprofit organization of the same name. The organization, launched by New York DJ Beverly Bond, aims to empower African-American girls.

“This show has become an essential platform where dynamic women are honored and exalted for bringing the best of our cultural contributions to the forefront, Bond said in a statement. “[This program] celebrates the nexus of achievements of women of color and showcases Black female excellence, to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders."

Since its inception, the BET special has appeared to be a success. According to TheGrio.com, last year's special ranked second in Black households at the time of its airing, with 1,969,000 viewers.
