North Carolina A&T Overcomes Morgan State for First MEAC Title in 13 Years

The Morgan State Bears men’s basketball team had won their last eight games and 11 of their last 12 contests, but the winning streak came to an end March 16 as the North Carolina A&T Aggies outlasted them, 57-54, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship in Norfolk, Va.

The Bears battled the Aggies all the way to the final moments of the game, but their chance of winning their third MEAC title in seven years was literally blocked as Aggies senior forward Adrian Powell swatted a potential tying three-point attempt by Morgan State senior forward DeWayne Jackson in the final seconds of the second half.

Powell also led his team with 14 points, which included two clutch free throws to give the Aggies a three-point lead with only 23 seconds left in the game.

Morgan’s Jackson led all scorers in the game with 20 points despite the loss.

The Aggies have now won their first MEAC title since 1995 and, with an automatic invitation as conference champion, will advance to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
