Bianca Jarrett scored a team-high 18 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line to lead visiting Morgan State to a 74-61 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over crosstown rival Coppin State Lady Eagles on Feb. 9 at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore.
Morgan State jumped out to a 16-10 lead on a three-pointer by Jarrett at the 14:22 mark, and the Eagles responded with an 11-0 run during a four-minute span to take a 21-16 lead. Coppin later used a 10-4 spurt to take a 35-28 lead with 37 seconds remaining in the opening half. But Southerland banked in a three-pointer from the left baseline as the buzzer sounded to cut the Coppin State deficit to 35-31 at the intermission.
In the second half, the Eagles held a 49-44 lead on a layup by Larissa Carter with 12:19 remaining in the contest. But Morgan State junior guard Whitney Southerland countered with back-to-back three-pointers, opening up an 18-3 run over the next six and a half minutes. Southerland ended the run with another three-pointer to give the guests a 62-52 advantage with 6:39 to play.
Coppin State answered with three-point play by junior forward Kyra Coleman to bring the Eagles within 62-55, but a jumper by freshman forward Alauna Jackson gave Morgan State its largest lead of the game at 68-55 with 4:47 to go. Thereafter Coppin failed to close the gap ending the game.
Morgan State shot 44 percent (25-of-56) from the floor, including 7-of-16 (43 percent) from three-point range. The Lady Bears also connected on 17-of-25 (68 percent) from the charity stripe and held a 49-43 rebounding advantage over Coppin State.
The host Eagles were 18-of-63 (28 percent) from the floor and hit 2-of-8 (25 percent) from three-point range. Coppin State took 41 free throws and made 23 for 56 percent.
Sophomore guard Tracey Carrington scored 12 points and Southerland came off the bench to add 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range, while sophomore guard Chyress Lockhart finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds to lead the Lady Bears to their first season sweep over the Eagles since 2010. The Lady Bears trail in all-time matchups between the teams, 35-28.
Coppin State (9-15, 5-6 MEAC) was led by Coleman, who finished with a game-high 22 points and tied teammate senior forward Leola Spotwood (nine points) with a game-high eight rebounds. Carter added 13 points.
The Lady Bears will face the Howard University Lady Bison on Feb. 11 at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium. This will be the only regular season meeting between the two teams. Howard is coming off a 59-30 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Feb. 9.
