Milford Mill junior forward Allen Costley scored a game-high 19 points to help his team edge by City College of Baltimore, 70-65, in the Maryland Class 3A North Region boys’ basketball title game on March 8 at the Deborah Stephan’s Gymnasium in Baltimore County, Md.
Baltimore County’s Milford Mill (24-2) advanced to the Maryland State Final Four at the University of Maryland’s Comcast Center in College Park, Md., and earned a shot at their third 3A state title in the last four years.
Milford Mill fought a tough battle with City College throughout the game. City College tied the game twice with less than four minutes remaining in the game, but each time Milford responded with big scores to retake the lead.
“We’re battle-tested, we’ve been through some tough games,” Milord Mill head coach Mike Silverman said after the game. “We found a way to win.”
Costley’s 19 points were followed by sophomore guard and teammate Justin Jenifer, who scored 17 points with nine assists.
City College junior Omari George led his team with 16 points while Blair Davis added 10 points in the loss.
Milford Mill will face Urbana of Frederick County (22-6) in a state final four match on March 14. Urbana beat Tuscarora (21-4) in the 3A West Region Finals on March 8.
Other Baltimore teams to reach the state finals include the Dunbar Poets, who beat Ben Franklin, 67-44, to reach the 1A state semifinals, and Edmonson-Westside, who beat Randallstown, 73-63, to advance to the 2A state semifinals.
The Poets (23-3) were led by junior forward Montaque Wright’s 13 points, 10 of which were scored in the second quarter in their win over Franklin (18-4). Dunbar will play their 1A Final Four game on March 15.
Edmonson—Westside senior guard Isaiah Tripp led his team with 19 points and junior teammate Darius Hubbard added 16 points in their win over Randallstown. Edmonson (19-5) will face Oakdale of Frederick County (22-3) in the 2A semifinals on March 15.
