Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Receives 2011 ENERGY STARĀ® Partner of the Year Award



BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® recognized for its focus on energy efficient products

BALTIMORE, April 12, 2011 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) today announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected the utility as one of its 2011 ENERGY STAR® award winners in the Partner of the Year category for energy efficiency program delivery for new homes and products. BGE was selected for its commitment to energy efficiency and its efforts to incentivize home builders to incorporate ENERGY STAR-rated products into new home construction and to offer rebates to individual home buyers who purchase qualifying ENERGY STAR appliances and systems. The award was announced today in Washington, D.C.

Since its inception in 2008, BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® has been strongly supported by BGE customers who have achieved an overall energy savings of more than 510 million kilowatt hours (kWh), equivalent to eliminating the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the electricity use of nearly 43,000 homes for one year. BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® is a suite of offerings intended to help customers reduce energy usage and demand in support of EmPOWER Maryland’s goal of a 15 percent per capita reduction in energy consumption by 2015.

Case, senior vice president of pricing and regulatory affairs for BGE. “Our customers continue to aggressively support BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® by taking advantage of rebates, bill credits and other incentives intended to help them cut their energy usage which may also help them reduce their energy bills. The success of this program is absolutely dependent upon customer participation and we accept this award on our customers’ behalf and share it with the BGE employees who work tirelessly to design, implement and improve our programs.”

The EPA award comes on the heels of other significant recognitions including:

-Platts Global Energy Award – Energy Efficiency Program of the Year;
-AESP 2010 Outstanding Achievement in Pricing and Demand Response Award for BGE’s Smart Energy Pricing pilot program;
-ENERGY STAR® New Homes 2010 Leadership in Housing Award for BGE’s energy efficient new homes program; and
-The Baltimore Chapter of the American Marketing Association 2010 Best Local Marketing Campaign Award for BGE’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Marketing campaign.

Among the many accomplishments of BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® to date is the enrollment of more than 300,000 BGE customers in BGE’s PeakRewardsSM program, designed to help ease peak demand for electricity in the mid-Atlantic region. Since the inception of the program, participating customers have helped Maryland reduce peak energy demand by nearly 500 megawatts (MW). This is equivalent to the generation capacity of a small power plant - or enough electricity to power 160,000 homes for one year. Additionally, PeakRewardsSM participants receive bill credits of up to $200 per year in the first year of participation.

Other significant milestones of BGE’s Smart Energy Savers Program® since 2008 include:

-7.1 million compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) sold through BGE’s Lighting Program which instantly discounts CFLs up to $2.50 per bulb at more than 300 participating retailers across BGE’s service area;
-More than 15,000 Quick Home Energy Check-ups which can provide customers with immediate energy savings of about $50 a year and ideas for taking additional steps to reduce a home or apartment’s energy use;
-Savings averaging $400 per year on energy bills for more than 2,400 customers participating in BGE’s Limited Income Energy Efficiency Program;
-More than 340,000 PeakRewardsSM devices installed in homes throughout BGE’s Central Maryland service area;
-Recycling approximately 500 pounds of mercury from more than 60,000 old thermostats replaced with BGE’s PeakRewardsSM thermostats;
-More than 13,000 refrigerators and/or freezers recycled as part of BGE’s Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling Program; and
-Recycled 800,000 linear feet of fluorescent lamps, or the equivalent of more than 150 miles of straight tube fluorescent lamps in 2010 as part of BGE’s Small Business Lighting Solutions Program. Ballast recycling has kept 73 tons of waste out of area landfills.
