BALTIMORE (Oct. 18, 2013) – Just in time for “Purple Friday,” Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) and the Baltimore Ravens have teamed up to recognize and honor outstanding community volunteers throughout Maryland who for their devotion to bettering communities through the annual Community Quarterback Award.

Funded by BGE and supported by NFL Charities and the Ravens Foundation, the award recognizes individuals who exemplify dedication, leadership and a commitment to improving the communities in which they live through volunteerism. Volunteers 13 and over from across Maryland, who provide extraordinary services for nonprofit organizations, with a focus on education, environment, community development and arts and culture, are eligible for the 2013 Community Quarterback Award program. Charitable organizations are invited to nominate their remarkable volunteers for recognition, or individuals may nominate themselves.

“BGE is proud to team up with our hometown Baltimore Ravens to honor outstanding community volunteers throughout Maryland,” said Calvin G. Butler Jr., senior vice president of regulatory and external affairs for BGE. “BGE itself has a long-standing history of giving back to the communities in which our employees live and work and through our employee volunteer network, ‘Energy for the Community,’ BGE employees lend their time and passion to corporate citizenship activities. Last year alone, BGE employees, friends and family spent more than 18,000 hours volunteering with more than 160 different community organizations. We are proud to be a part of the 2013 Community Quarterback Awards and we look forward to honoring our customers, who are making a real difference in our communities each day.”

The selected volunteers will be acknowledged on Dec. 8, 2013 at the Ravens vs. Vikings game at M&T Bank Stadium. Honorees will be awarded game tickets for themselves and a guest, Ravens apparel and autographed memorabilia, a commemorative plaque and a $3,000 financial grant from BGE benefitting their respective nonprofit organization.

Applications for the 2013 Community Quarterback Award can be completed online at Oct. 18 through Nov. 15, 2013. All nominees will be acknowledged by BGE and the Ravens for their commitment to bettering Maryland communities.

Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, BGE has played an integral role in working with Maryland communities to address economic development, public safety, civic issues and other initiatives that help enhance our neighborhoods. Through the use of shareholder dollars, BGE supports programs that deliver measurable and sustainable impact in areas of education, economic development, environment and arts and culture.

BGE’s corporate citizenship aligns with that of its parent company, Exelon Corporation. As part of Exelon’s merger in March 2012, Exelon and its subsidiaries have committed to maintain charitable giving of an average of $7 million per year in Maryland, including BGE’s service area, for the next 10 years. BGE’s support of the 2013 Community Quarterback Award fulfills that commitment.
