Accredited jewelry professional, designer and owner Christine Haynes has spent many years helping beautify several women with her custom line of jewelry, Fezelry Jewelry Designs. Now the New York native turned Maryland resident will have a chance to bask in her own beauty as a finalist for the “Accessorizer of the Year” award at this year’s Fashion Awards MD.
Haynes and her jewelry line was voted from more than 10,000 nomination submissions to be placed on the final ballot for a chance to win the prestigious award, scheduled to be announced at the Fashion Awards MD’s first annual live event on June 9 at University of Maryland’s Kay Theatre, located in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
“It is truly an honor to be nominated for such an award and I am hopeful this is the first of many more to come for Fezelry Jewelry Designs,” said Haynes, who told the AFRO that she was “shocked” to learn that she had been nominated as a finalist for such an award. Haynes said she nominated some of her friends/colleagues for the award but didn’t nominate herself. Yet one of her clients returned the favor by nominating Fezelry for the award and the rest is history.
“I didn’t expect it because I didn’t even pick myself so I was very surprised when I found out I made the final cut,” Haynes said. “I nearly fell out my chair, screaming out of excitement. It was an amazing feeling.”
Haynes told the AFRO that Fezelry is a bridge jewelry line: the median between fine jewelry and fashion jewelry. She’s been creating Fezelry jewelry pieces for nearly a decade, and admitted she was initially a little surprised her line has had this much success, especially after she avoided turning it into a serious business for a while.
“I would make jewelry often for friends and family, and of course they would love it but you kind of expect your family to compliment and support your craft, even if it isn’t good,” said Haynes, a married mother of two. “It took for me to maybe stop doubting myself for me to take it to the next level.”
Certainly all doubt is erased now that Haynes has successfully created jewelry that has been featured by several women in the D.C. Metropolitan area, including well-known figures such as famous actress Leah Remini, co-host of The Talk and Angie Goff, weekend morning anchor for NBC Washington.
“Christine Haynes creates the most elegant pieces,” Goff said. “I like to wear them on-air because jewelry should be beautiful but never distracting.”
With the continued support from her friends, family and clients, Haynes now feels there’s no limit to how far Fezelry can go.
“I started this business on a small loan from a friend that believed in my talent and it’s still going today because of the people that continue to believe in my talent,” Haynes said. “What a wonderful blessing!
