“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.” Marianne Williamson

“This joint is jumping.” For 39 years the Gladiators Association has hosted a bull and oyster roast on Palm Sunday at Martin’s West. The pit beef was tender, the oysters sweet and the dance floor you could hardly move. There were so many people, cars were parked on Dogwood Road and the overflow lot leading up to Rolling Road or as we call it the back forty. This event draws people from the Eastside to the Westside, and from as far away as Philadelphia. The local clubs 5 Mile House, The Poets, Maceo’s, Roots, Corinthians, Melba’s and Windsor Inn were represented.
“That’s what friends are for” “Every day will be like a holiday” going from place to place when Ora Reed is in town. I felt like a tourist “grooving on a Saturday afternoon” with my longtime friend Ora, visiting from Tokyo, Japan where she performs at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa.
We stopped at the Four Seasons for cocktails in Wit and Wisdom to enjoy the breathtaking view of the waterfront. People were strolling the promenade or sitting on the patio sipping drinks enjoying the gorgeous weather. “Ain’t no stopping us now we on the move.” Next we headed to Duda’s Tavern on Thames Street for a Raven burger with the works, including chili and jalapeño peppers. As the sun set, we left Duda’s and ventured across the cobblestone street to Bond Street Social, and sat outside by the fireplace, people watching and enjoying the magnificent Baltimore skyline. Bond Street Social is a high-end restaurant and club with a D.C. atmosphere.
Somewhere between here and there, I promised I would worship with her Sunday morning, forgetting the change in time. “…Come Sunday…” A little late but true to my word I met her at New Psalmist for the 7 a.m. service. After breakfast we went to New Shiloh were Pastor Harold Carter Sr. gave a rousing sermon titled, “Getting Dressed Up for Easter.” I was surprised when I arrived to see Ty Tribbett performing at the morning service. He definitely “set it off.” Pastor Carter, in praising Ty Tribbett’s performance, said, “I saw people shouting that’s never shouted before.”
