Living for the Weekend

“Monday to Thursday, I'm dead on my feet most of the time, too tired to eat. When I try to read the paper, I fall fast asleep. But as soon as Friday rolls around I lay all my weekly burdens down, I put on my glad rags and paint the town. I am ‘living for the weekend.’– the O’ Jays

The O’ Jays’ classic “living for the weekend” started Thursday at Professor Larry Gibson’s spacious home, where we prepared thousands of lawn signs and bumper stickers for distribution before the election, with Ralph Wright, Anderson Ward, Vivian “Dip” Armstrong, Charlene Cooper-Boston, Myra Queen, Lonnie Spruill and members of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity.

Friday morning I joined attorney Norman Ramsey, Salima Siler-Marriott, Victor Green, Libby Massey and attorney Paul Gardner downtown at the Office of Civil Rights and Wage Enforcement’s annual breakfast at the Hilton. Radio personality Joe Madison was the dynamic speaker at the well-attended event. Guests seen were Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Kim Washington, Great Blacks in Wax CEO Dr. Joanne Martin and Michele Brown from Sen.Mikulski’s office. Friday Night I’m in D.C. for Congressman Elijah Cummings’ Congressional Black Caucus reception at the Carnegie Library. Guests enjoying the scrumptious food catered by Jimmy Britton and the music by Panama were Lt. Gov. and Mrs. Anthony Brown, California Congresswoman Diane Watson (D), Nykidra Robinson, Pat Burns, Sean Burns, Zach McDaniels, Rose Hamm and Rhonda Warner.

"Rise & shine” Saturday morning, I joined National Coalition of 100 Black Women Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter President Laura Knight, Michele Emery, Dr. Anne Emery, Dr. Thelma Daley, Diane Hocker, Sarah Smalley, Dr. Marian Davis-Foster, Karaleigh Henson and the rest of National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Baltimore chapter, at their 23rd Torchbearer Awards Breakfast honoring Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian Lowery, Secretary of Higher Education Dr. Danette G. Howard and Assistant Secretary of Higher Education Dr. Tonja Ringgold as coalition members Rosemary Atkinson and Bernice Beard received the organization’s Jewel Award and the President’s Award respectively.

“Come Sunday” I’m “starting all over again” at the 25th Winter in the Park Picnic, hosted by 5 Women & 2 Guys, Blandette Lynch, Lyberian “Libby” Massey, Everlon Moulton, Maxine Turnipseed, Yvonne West, Willard Wright and Victor Green. The winter picnic started in December 1987. For years, partygoers endured frigid temperatures, ice storms, blowing rain and partied as if it was a “bright sunshiny day.” Guests wore fur coats and sunglasses and stood around the fireplace enjoying the warmth of friendship! The name changed to PICNIC IN THE PARK since the park closes in October but the fun and friendships keeps growing.

“You don't need to be on the same wavelength to succeed in marriage. You just need to be able to ride each other's waves.” Toni Sciarra Poynter

“You’re all I need to get by” I left the picnic to attend the garden party celebrating Debbie and Errol Taylor’s 10th anniversary at the beautiful Ashburton home of Earl’s mom, Mildred Taylor. Guests enjoying the gorgeous afternoon were Audrey Freeman, Liston George, Ann Parker, Reggie and Sharon Pinder, Dr. J. Laws Nickens Jr., Dr. Anne Emery, Aldonna Wylie and Chandra and Ellsworth Jackson.

“Are we there yet?” Go Ravens! After Debbie and Errol’s reception I headed downtown to the M&T Stadium to tailgate with Ravens Roost #35 before the Patriot’s game. What a great way to end the day with Roost members, Tyrone Seymore, Vince, Thelma and the rest of the gang.

“Daylight come and me wanna go home” Inside the stadium I lost track of the time, it was 11:45 p.m., fifteen minutes before the weekend would be over. I told Marie (Dr. Washington) I think my “ebb-tide” has come and gone. We left the game during the fourth quarter, I was on Interstate 95 south blowing my horn when the Ravens won. I’m grateful for a fun weekend and my fantastic friends who make “living for the weekend”.

“There’s reasons to life! We can lift ourselves out of ignorance; we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence, intelligence and skill. We can be free! We can learn to fly!” Jonathan Livingston Seagull

I’m “fired up and ready to go!” We have a purpose; we have a destiny to move forward like Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

“Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who don't vote.” William Simon

Remember the people who, like the seagull, believed they could fly so we could have the right to vote. Show what 47% can do “we’ve come too far to turn around.” The last day to register to vote is Oct. 16.
