Lt. Governor Brown to Hold Press Conference Announcing Recovery of Funds

More than $26 million in fraud, waste and abuse reclaimed in FY 10; Passage of False Claims Act strengthens State’s efforts to target theft, protect most vulnerable Marylanders

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (July 22, 2010) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary John M. Colmers and DHMH Inspector General Thomas V. Russell will announce steps taken to recapture more than $26.3 million in medical care program dollars during FY 2010 under the Department’s Program Integrity Program. Combined with this year’s successful passage of the O’Malley-Brown administration bill, the Maryland False Health Claim Act (FCA) of 2010, the State expects to recover $46.5 million in FY11 – over $20 million more than was recovered in FY10. The FCA has been characterized as the U.S. taxpayers’ single most important tool in recouping millions of dollars defrauded the government each year.
