BALTIMORE, Feb. 20, 2012 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) today announced that BGE customers now have an easy way to make tax-deductible contributions to support the Fuel Fund’s mission of helping limited income families meet their home energy needs through bill assistance and energy conservation education. The Fuel Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
BGE’s new Dollar Donation Fund allows customers to choose a monthly amount to donate to the Fuel Fund– $1, $2, $5 or $10 a month. BGE will add that amount to the bill, and when customers pay their bill in full, BGE will forward the contribution to the Fuel Fund. Customers may change their level of participation or withdraw from the program at any time. At the end of the year, the Fuel Fund will send gift acknowledgements to all donors for tax purposes. BGE customers may enroll in the new program by visiting bge.com/DollarDonation.
“BGE and its customers have long supported the Fuel Fund and the work it does in helping vulnerable households not only pay their utility bills, but learn how to become energy self-sufficient,” said Jeannette M. Mills, senior vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “The new Dollar Donation Fund gives BGE customers an easy and convenient way to donate to the Fuel Fund by allowing them to simply ‘set it and forget it’ and know that every month they are helping those less fortunate meet their energy needs.”
Since its founding 30 years ago, with seed money from BGE, the Fuel Fund has helped thousands of individuals and families stay warm in the winter and keep the lights on year round.
“BGE and its customers have been incredibly generous over the years in helping some of our most vulnerable neighbors in Central Maryland, especially during these difficult economic times,” said Mary Ellen Vanni, executive director of the Fuel Fund. “The Dollar Donation Fund offers a very easy way for those who can spare a dollar or more a month to help those who sorely need this assistance. This type of support is critical to the elderly and families with children, which made up the majority of the nearly 24,000 individuals we were able to help last year, with support from BGE, its customers and our other donors.”
During the past 30 years, BGE, its customers and parent company Constellation Energy, have contributed more than $36 million to the Fuel Fund of Maryland. The annual winter Envelope Campaign alone has generated nearly $8 million in customer-funded support to the Fuel Fund. Those generous contributions have helped tens of thousands of Fuel Fund clients in need.
