ADELPHI, Md. (May 4, 2012) –THIS EVENING, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will greet attendees at the Center for Business Inclusion and Diversity, Inc.’s Top 100 MBE Awards honoring minority and women-owned entrepreneurs in the Mid-Atlantic region who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in entrepreneurship, professionalism and community contributions. Businesses from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. are nominated by the region’s chambers of commerce, professional organizations, business community members and members of the general public. Hosts for this year’s event include State Farm, Southwest Airlines Co., University of Maryland University College, and the State of Maryland. As the point person for the O’Malley Brown Administration’s economic development portfolio, Lt. Governor Brown has hosted several MBE University events to support Maryland’s minority and women-owned businesses and to highlight the State’s progress with minority business enterprises (MBEs). Maryland has an aggressive and progressive MBE Program and has established the highest minority and women-owned business contracting goals in the nation at 25 percent. In addition, Maryland is one of a few states with an MBE law in statute and remains the only state in the nation to collect uniform reporting data including actual payments to MBEs.
