GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY TO ATTEND LUNCHEON FOR REVEREND MARCUS GARVEY WOOD
Governor will join in celebrating 60 years of service

BALTIMORE, MD
(September 22, 2012) - TODAY, Governor Martin O’Malley will attend a luncheon
celebrating Reverend Marcus Garvey Wood’s 60 years of service at Providence Baptist Church in Baltimore City.

“Today, we are honored to pay tribute to a man who has dedicated his life to helping others and strengthening his community,” said Governor O’Malley. “During some of the most volatile
times in our nation’s history, in the face of tremendous adversity, Reverend Wood’s compassion has guided his work to touch countless lives.”

Rev. Wood was a member of the first class of African American ministers accepted into the Crozer Theological Seminary, where he studied alongside classmate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
and recently received the “Distinguished Alumni Award.”
In the 1960’s, Rev. Wood was actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area, participating in marches, demonstrations and sit-ins.
In observance of Rev. Wood’s 50th pastoral anniversary in 2002, Lancaster Theological Seminary established a scholarship fund in his honor.
