Governor to host Google Plus Hangout with students across the state

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 24, 2012) – TOMORROW, Governor Martin O’Malley will host student government presidents and members of the University System of Maryland Student Council for an informal conversation about tuition and the importance of investing in higher education to build Maryland’s highly-skilled workforce and prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow.

In August, two student leaders wrote a letter to the Governor on the importance of keeping college affordable
<http://governor.maryland.gov/documents/USMstudentletter.pdf. The O’Malley-Brown Administration remains committed to making the dream of a college education affordable and accessible for more families, freezing tuition at public colleges and universities for an unprecedented four years in a row, setting goals to encourage Marylanders to obtain a degree or credential, and launching initiatives like Skills2Compete.

According to recent findings by the College Board
<http://trends.collegeboard.org/college-pricing, Maryland’s tuition at in-state four-year colleges and universities has been driven down from the 8th highest in the nation to the 27th highest. According to a five-year study of tuition and fees by the College Board, Maryland has also held the line on tuition and fees more than any other state in the nation. At the State’s community colleges, Maryland has the 6th smallest increase in tuition and fees in the nation.

In addition to hosting student leaders in Annapolis, the Governor will open up the latter half of the meeting for a Google Plus Hangout with students across the State. The conversation can be watched live here
