CARDIN TO DISCUSS UPCOMING SEQUESTRATION

WITH FEDERAL WORKERS AT TOWN HALL

MEETING AT SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION IN WOODLAWN

On Monday, February 25 at 10 a.m., U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, will hold a town hall with employees of the Social Security Administration (SSA) headquarters in Baltimore County. The SSA headquarters complex employees approximately 12,000 federal workers and this will continue Senator Cardin’s periodic visits to federal facilities specifically to discuss the looming threat of sequestration and the latest federal budget battles with federal workers. After brief remarks, the majority of the session will be dedicated to Q&A from SSA employees.

On March 1, sequestration – automatic, across-the-board spending cuts – will begin to take effect. Unless Congress acts, sequestration requires $42.7 billion in cuts to defense programs and another $42.7 billion in cuts to non-defense programs over the next year. Cuts of this magnitude will have a profound effect on Maryland and our entire nation. Senator Cardin works every day to ensure that the federal government is attentive to the unique concerns of the people who live and work in Maryland. This includes looking out for federal employees who have contributed to our debt relief with a multi-year pay freeze and protecting resources for federal agencies headquartered in our state that could see serious cuts due to sequestration.
