STATEMENT FROM LT. GOVERNOR BROWN ON SENATE PASSAGE OF

DEATH PENALTY REPEAL

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (March 6, 2013) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown released the following statement today on the vote by the Maryland Senate to pass legislation that would repeal the death penalty:

“I want to thank the members of the Senate for their thoughtful and considered debate, and applaud them for acting favorably on this important legislation. Today's vote affirms that we can be strong on justice while also protecting innocence. Repealing the death penalty is the only way to protect the lives of wrongfully convicted Marylanders, ensuring that no Marylander is put to death as the result of a biased and fundamentally flawed process. As we look to the future, we have a responsibility to build a state where fairness, truth, and justice – and not retribution or bias – are at the core of our beliefs. Today, we are one step closer to making that future a reality, but our work is far from finished. As this legislation moves to the House of Delegates, I look forward to continued discussion with lawmakers, advocates, and my fellow Marylanders on this critical issue.”
