Comptroller Urges Support of “Marketplace Fairness Act”

Alongside Local Retailers

WHO:             Comptroller Peter Franchot
Chris Coleman, co-owner Nelson Coleman Jewelers; p
resident, Tri-State Jewelers Association
                       Elected officials
                        Business representatives

WHAT
:          With an extensive history as a strong advocate for small businesses, Comptroller Franchot will join Chris Coleman of Nelson Coleman Jewelers, other area small business leaders and various elected officials in support of the Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013, currently being debated in Congress.  The legislation would allow states to require online and catalog retailers to collect sales tax at the time of sale, regardless of whether they have a physical location in the state. Local retailers are currently obligated to collect sales tax.

Retail businesses play a vital role in the sustainability of the state by employing more than 500,000 hard-working Marylanders and keeping citizens’ hard-earned money in their communities. It is estimated that Maryland loses approximately $173 million annually from non-taxed online sales.
