Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs Holds

Hearing:

Rebalance III: Protecting the Environment and Ensuring Food and Water Security

in East Asia and the Pacific

WASHINGTON, DC – TODAY, Wednesday, July 24th at 2PM, Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee Chairman Ben Cardin will preside over a hearing titled, “Rebalance III: Protecting the Environment and Ensuring Food and Water Security in East Asia and the Pacific.” The hearing will consist of two panels.

The Asia-Pacific region has undergone significant industrialization and urbanization during the last two decades. This has quickly made it the world’s center of economic growth but at a serious environmental cost. Industrial plants have increased the discharge of pollutants and wastes into its waters. Biodiversity is dwindling. Damming has threatened water and food security downstream. Overfishing is depleting fish stocks and causing tensions to rise as fishermen seek more fish in disputed waters. Increasing energy demands, deforestation and increasing carbon emissions have made air pollution a critical problem; two-thirds of the world’s deaths from air pollution are in Asia. Several of these problems carry the potential to destabilize parts of the region.

East Asian states are recognizing that environmental degradation is an impediment to economic growth. For the U.S., helping our partners and allies in the region address environmental challenges is essential for preventing future conflict and instability and advancing our economic interests in the region.
