MEADE WHO HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY SEQUESTRATION FURLOUGHS

Wednesday, August 14 at 1:00PM, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin will visit Fort Meadeto hold an informal town hall with civilian DOD employees to discuss sequestration and the federal budget. He will meet with a representative group of the more than 27,000 DOD civilian employees at Fort Meade, a majority of who have been facing furloughs brought on by sequestration cuts. In July, DOD began furloughs for 652,000 civilian employees nationwide – 46,000 in Maryland alone. Fort Meade, the nation’s hub for information, intelligence and cybersecurity is Maryland’s largest employer and the cut in pay has had ripple effects throughout the region.

“Sequestration is hurting real people and real families. It’s harming our national security readiness and local economies. It is irresponsible to let political dysfunction get in the way of ensuring for our national security and public health,” said Senator Cardin. “We must restart negotiations on a comprehensive plan to replace all of sequestration and restore normal, regular – and in many circumstance – absolutely essential functions of our government.”
