CARDIN STATEMENT ON IRS RECOGNITION OF LEGAL SAME-SEX MARRIAGES FOR TAX PURPOSES

CARDIN SAYS LOGICAL IRS DECISION ON SAME-SEX MARRIED COUPLES BRINGS CLARITY TO AMERICAN FAMILIES

Washington, DC— Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) issued the following statement in response to today’s Internal Revenue Service (IRS) ruling that legally married same-sex couples will be treated as married for federal tax purposes:

“I commend the IRS on their decision to treat married same-sex couples as such for federal tax purposes. The Service’s decision follows logically from the Supreme Court’s Windsor decision, and brings greatly-needed guidance and clarity to same-sex couples and their families. As I stated in my letter to Treasury Secretary Lew and IRS Commissioner Werfel, legally married same-sex couples should be able to move throughout the country without a change in their federal filing status. I’m pleased the Service shares this view, and is advancing both equality under the law and uniformity in our tax code.”

The IRS’s ruling came two weeks after Senator Cardin sent Secretary Lew and Commissioner Werfel a letter urging them to promptly resolve questions and clarify tax guidelines for legally married same-sex couples.
