WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will present a proclamation to the Moore family, owners of a pick-your-own Larriland Farm to celebrate their 50 years as a family-operated farm. The Moores acquired the farm in 1963 and ran it as a dairy farm for several years. Later, the farm was converted from a dairy operation to grow agronomic crops. By 1973, the Moores decided to get into the fruit and vegetable market and their first acre of strawberries was harvested.
Today, during the various seasons, those who visit Larriland Farm can find acres of strawberries, sweet and tart cherries, black and red raspberries, blueberries, thornless blackberries, plums, nectarines, peaches and apples and vegetables including spinach, onions, potatoes, beets, tomatoes, broccoli, Swiss chard, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage and pumpkins. During the fall harvest time, visitors also can enjoy hayrides, a straw maze, the Boo Barn and apple fritters made with Mrs. Moore’s own recipe.
