The Washington County students are: Alexus Smetzer, a fourth grader at Bester Elementary School in Hagerstown; Haley Rodriguez, an eighth grader at Spingfield Middle School in Williamsport; and Anastasia Fedorko, a junior at Clear Spring High School. While the comptroller is in Washington County, he will visit Mount Hope Christmas Tree Farm and present a proclamation to the Blickeknstaff family, who have offered holiday shoppers a variety of fresh trees, holiday decorations and gifts for many years.

The Maryland Masters Award recognizes young scholars who have displayed extraordinary artistic skills and vision for Maryland’s future. The new award program was initiated to celebrate students’ achievements through the arts and to showcase artwork of students from Kindergarten to 12th grade for two months in the Comptroller’s Office in Annapolis. The students’ art also will join a collection of original paintings by one of the Comptroller’s favorite artists, Herman Maril. An American modernist, Maril was born in Baltimore and served as a professor at the University of Maryland for more than 30 years.
