LT. GOVERNOR BROWN TO GIVE MEMORIAL ADDRESS AT DULANEY VALLEY MEMORIAL GARDENS MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE

TIMONIUM, Md. (May 27, 2011) – MONDAY, Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown will give the Memorial Address at the annual Memorial Day Observance ceremony hosted by Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens to honor Marylanders who have given their lives in defense of their country. This year’s ceremony will honor nine Marylanders who died in the last year fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“On Memorial Day, we come together to pay tribute and respect to those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation and our freedom,” said Lt. Governor Brown. “This year, we are deeply saddened by the loss of nine brave Marylanders who answered the call to serve in our Armed Forces and gave their lives in service to our country. Nothing can fully relieve the pain and anguish that their loved ones are experiencing, but as a State – as a community – we will do everything in our power to support the families of those who have fallen. In doing so, we truly honor their memories and their enduring sacrifice.”

Officials and families will gather for an open ceremony at The Circle of the Immortals Field of Honor, the resting place of 25 Marylanders killed in Vietnam and two killed in Iraq. The event is strongly supported by the Maryland Military Department and will include the 229th Army Band, the Maryland National Guard Color Guard, a firing party and a bugler. The Adjutant General of the Maryland Military Department will be represented by Brigadier General Peter C. Hinz, commander of the Maryland Army National Guard.

Lt. Governor Brown, a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and the highest ranking elected official to have served a tour of duty in Iraq, leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s efforts to improve services for Maryland’s veterans.
