Joyce E. Gainey, 45

Joyce Ellen Gainey was born on August 22, 1966 at Freeman’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. Joyce was the youngest child born to Jerome and Catherine Gainey.

Joyce attended Smother’s Elementary, Kelly Miller Junior High and Joel E. Spingarn (1984) Senior High School. At age 16, Joyce began working her first job with the D.C. Summer Job Program, where she worked at Blow Elementary School as an intern tutoring children. After high school, she held positions at Office of Human Relations and for the Association for Renewal in Education. Later she wanted to get specialization training in the clerical field; she successfully attended and graduated from the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute Training Center, Washington, D.C. with a certification in Clerical Studies in 1999. Later, seeking new interests, she attended classes from the Washington Area Women In The Trades (WAWIT), and graduated with a certification for completion in industrial painting with the D.C. Pre-Apprenticeship Training Class of Ironworkers Local Union #5 in 2007. She held various positions with Chimes, and recently worked as a waitress with Au Bon Pain, in Georgetown, D.C.

She was a loving, free spirit, always willing to try new things. Her hobbies included Washington Redskins football, baseball, movies, dancing and go-go music. She will be remembered as a special young woman, with a beautiful face, generous to a fault and never willing to bother other people with her personal struggles. In 2001, Joyce accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

She leaves to cherish her memory: brothers, Mark and Michael Gainey, sisters: Valerie Augustus, Lisa Gainey Wheeler and Kathleen Gainey, brother-in-law: W. James Wheeler, sister-in-law: Sandra Gainey, nephews: Ernest Brooks, Mark Gainey Jr., Dion Johnson, Michael Grissom, and Philip Wheeler, nieces: Keia Gainey, Tiara Gainey, Renee and Sharmea Grissom, and special friend, Melvin Agurs and a host of other relatives and friends.
