It came across my desk recently about a gentleman many of you may know. His name is Dick Smith. Vocalist and former Washington Redskin, Dick Smith is a legend in D.C., both as a performer and as an organizer of Jazz Night in Southwest, the long-running concert series that draws hundreds of music fans to the Westminster Presbyterian Church every Friday night. In addition to lending his talents to that effort, Smith has been a featured performer at the East Coast Jazz Festival, the Blue Bar and other D.C. area venues. On Oct. 12 he will present the Larry Brown Quintet with Larry Brown on piano, Kent Miller on bass, Dominic Smith on drums, Thad Wilson on trumpet and Peter Fraize playing sax.
This is such a new and exciting program which also includes my favorite, some “Down Home Blues”. That is right! Also under the leadership of Dick Smith, every Monday from 6-9 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 400 First St., S.W. in Washington, D.C. the blues rock the stage with some of the regions’ finest blues musicians and entertainers. These events attract crowds from both the D.C. and Baltimore areas. The next blues show is schedules for Oct. 8 fare is to feature Charlie Sayles and the Blues Disciples with Charlie Sayles on harmonica and vocals, Clarence Turner on bass, Tony Fazio on guitar, and Greg Phillips on drums and J. J. Gray playing sax. For more information and tickets, call 202-484-7700.
