First Lady Michelle Obama to Appear at Morgan State University Reception

First Lady Michelle Obama will be adding one of Baltimore’s leading historical Black colleges to the list of stops on the campaign trail this month.
Morgan State University will host the first lady as part of a fundraiser for the president’s re-election on Sept. 21 at 3pm.

The event will take place inside the Murphy Fine Arts Center located on the southern portion of the university’s campus.

“We are delighted, not only that she is visiting Baltimore, but that she will be here at Morgan,” said Clinton R. Coleman, director of communications and public affairs for the university. “This is history and we are proud to be a part of it.”

Although planning for the event has been in the works for five months, murmurs of the event began to surface last month when Coleman says he first got word that “Mrs. Obama would likely be visiting Baltimore and that Morgan would be one of the sites.”

Coleman said he is hoping the First Lady will “deliver another one of those fine speeches like the one she delivered at the Democratic National Convention.”
Planning for the event began in March under the direction of Calvin H. Baker and Michael Cryor, chair and co-chair of the organizing committee, respectively.

“We thought it was important that the Baltimore community, in particular the African- American community, have ownership and participation in helping to raise funds to enable our president, Barack Obama, to campaign effectively,” said Baker, adding that he believed Obama needed another term in order to “finish what he started four years ago.”

“This will probably be the second most important election in our lifetime, the first being the election of 2008,” said Baker.

The organization’s target: $500,000 for the re-election campaign’s final push.
“The president is engineering a major recovery of the American economy and making sure that more Americans are the beneficiaries of the resources this country has to offer,” said Cryor.

“It takes more than four years to implement that full plan.”

Tickets are still available for the event and start at $25 for students. Admission for attendees 40 and younger is $100, and general admission tickets for others range from $250 to $1,000. For more information visit www.obamavictoryfundraiser.com.
