Blood Donation Drive for Children with Sickle Cell

Davon Williams, of Southeast Washington, is 9. He is a vital young man with a bright future. He comes from a loving family. He enjoys playing video games and listening to music. And he is fighting bravely against the ravages of sickle cell disease.

In an effort to save his life, Williams’ mother, Shameka Jones-Williams, and medical care providers at Children’s National Medical Center, are holding a blood and bone marrow drive. Davon, and others being treated at Children’s, have developed antibodies that make it difficult for them to match with most donated blood. Doctors hope that the blood drive will donate significant amounts of rarer blood to allow such children to receive the treatment they need.

The Donate for Davon Sickle Cell Blood and Bone Marrow Donor Drive is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Cricket Wireless store at 626 Rhode Island Avenue NE, Washington, D.C. 20002. Cricket Wireless, Waste Entertainment and the Eddie Kayne Show on Listen Vision are co-sponsoring the event. For more information, contact Shameka Jones-Williams at 202-455-1545 or via email at sjones@hypedyouthdc.org
