A Fair of a Weekend: 2013 DC State Fair & Barracks Row Fall Festival Takes Over Capitol Hill

There’s no produce or prize-winning livestock in D.C., to speak of, but that hasn’t stopped the District of Columbia from holding a state fair. The D.C. State Fair again joined the Barracks Row Fall Festival this year, showcasing creative contests with categories such as “The Funkiest Looking Vegetable Contest” and the “Heaviest Fruit Contest”, highlighting D.C. resident’s talent and love for urban agriculture. That was just part of what fairgoers saw at the Barracks Row on Eighth Street, S.E. saw.

In conjunction with the D.C. State Fair, the Southeast Branch of the D.C. Public Library hosted a Seed Saving Talk and Swap. Mia Hayes-Hawkins, a master gardener, shared techniques for saving seeds from garden harvests. Garden enthusiasts came with questions and many seeds to share, making the entire day a fun-filled affair on Capitol Hill.

Barrack’s Row is a vibrant business district and community steeped in history. Located along Eighth Street, S.E., it continues to be revitalized while reconnecting Capitol Hill to the Anacostia River using historic preservation and the arts.
