D.C. Student-Athletes Awarded $21,000 at DCSAA Scholarship Reception

The District of Columbia State Athletics Association (DCSAA), the Washington D.C. association that oversees post-season high school athletic contests, held its first Student Athlete Academic Scholarship Winners Reception on May 14 at Carnegie Library in Washington, D.C. The reception honored 21 high school seniors who were each selected to receive $1,000 college scholarships from the DCSAA, Modell’s Sporting Goods and Wendy’s restaurants.

“This is our legacy class,” said Executive Director Clark Ray. “Thanks to our sponsors, we were able to secure $21,000 to give out only to DC athletes for not only excelling on the field, but excelling in the classroom as well.”

The DCSAA was created in 2012 by D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray to expand interscholastic competition and enhance student-athlete achievement in public schools, public charter schools and independent private and parochial schools.

This year’s scholarship winners represented 11 schools from across the District, including public, charter and private schools. 21 student-athletes applied for the academic scholarship, and all 21 met the criteria.

“Tonight was about students first,” said Ray. “We root for them, cheer for them in all of their academic endeavors. Athletics come second.”
