Silver Spring, Md-- The Montgomery Parks Foundation, a Silver Spring, Md based fundraising and support group which promotes the benefits of the Montgomery County, Md. parks system to local residents and lawmakers, will partner with industry leaders in environmental education for an upcoming evening showcase of programs designed to enhance environmental literacy in the classroom.
The Mid-Atlantic region’s top environmental education providers will gather at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. to demonstrate their programs and talk with teachers face-to-face.
In 2011, Maryland became the first state in the nation to require students to meet environmental literacy standards before graduating from high school. There are eight state standards: Environmental Issues; Interactions of Earth's Systems; Flow of Matter and Energy; Populations, Communities and Ecosystems; Humans and Natural Resources; Environment and Health; Environment and Society; Sustainability. Regional environmental education providers have geared outreach and field trip opportunities to assist schools, teachers and students in meeting these standards and many of the programs fulfill Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, requirements as well.
Teachers attending the event will find a myriad of innovative resources from Meadowside Nature Center’s Live Raptor Program and Izaak Walton League’s Creek Freaks to NASA’s STEM Academy and NOAA’s Estuaries 101. Other exhibitors presenting include, American Chestnut Society, Audubon Naturalist Society, Brickyard Educational Farm, Casey Trees, Croydon Creek Nature Center, Living Classrooms, MAEOE, Marian Koshland Science Museum, National Children’s Museum, National Park Service, Patuxent Research Refuge, Red Wiggler Community Farm, Robinson Nature Center, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission and Watkins Nature Center.
