A Washington, D.C. man was sentenced Sept. 21 to 15 years in prison for the shooting death of another man inside a Northeast apartment building earlier this year, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia said.

Keyon Caldwell, 33, of D.C. pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the April 11 shooting of Draynell Henderson, 29, in the apartment building where Caldwell lived on the 600 block of 24th Street NE.

Caldwell told the court that Henderson came to his apartment and that the two left to smoke PCP together in the hallway. According to a release from the office of U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen Jr., Caldwell’s girlfriend, who was in a bedroom with the couple’s young children, heard gunshots coming from the living room. After initially locking the door and calling for help, she later entered the living room to see Caldwell prone on the floor of the apartment and Henderson lying in a pool of blood in the hallway.

Henderson’s girlfriend was able to pry the gun away from Caldwell, Machen said, and call 911. Investigators found Caldwell still lying on the floor, apparently under the influence of PCP. Henderson had been shot six times in the arms and torso.
