On Oct. 13, female veterans from across the country vied to win the crown in the Ms. Veteran America pageant at the National Conference Center in Leesburg, Va.

The annual event spotlights the women who serve America and serves as a fundraiser for Final Salute, an organization that provides housing and aid to homeless female veterans and their children.

Instead of donning their usual uniforms, participants glammed up in flowing gowns and competed in a host of categories. Judges selected the top contestants based on the ability to answer military questions, their beauty and stage presence.

During the event, guests enjoyed musical selections and listened to remarks from a host of special guests including last year’s winner, Denyse Gordon of the United States Air Force Reserve.

After several rounds of eliminations, U.S. Army veteran Allaina Parton Guitron of Syracuse, N.Y. was named Ms. Veteran America 2013.
