In celebration of 65 years of providing dance instruction to the Washington, D.C. community, The Therrell C. Smith School of Dance and The Thomas and Birdie C. Smith Arts Foundation will hold a luncheon and performances Nov. 9 at Dunbar Senior High School.

Therrell Smith held her first dance class in 1948 at the LeDroit Park Nursery School.

As the dance school grew, more space became necessary and a building at 49 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W., was purchased. In the 1960s, further expansion became necessary and the school moved to its present location, 2019 Bunker Hill Road, N.E., where classes are still being held.

In addition, for the past 39 years Smith has provided dance instruction for thousands of children in several District of Columbia Public Schools.
