Healthcare workers from across the region will gather on 3:30 p.m. June 24 at Mt. Vernon Square (intersection of N. Charles and E. Madison) for the Heart of Baltimore Rally, an event calling for better jobs, better health care and a better Baltimore. Actor and activist Danny Glover will join the city’s health care workers as they aim to make a change.

Also joining the workers are singer Meli’sa Morgan and other special guests.

This event marks the first health care rally since 1969, when Coretta Scott King visited the city to assist thousands of under-paid caregivers create a union.
Healthcare workers continue to face low wages today, as nurse’s aides, the backbone of the health care system, are two-and-a-half times more likely to be on food stamps than other Maryland employees.

Launched in October, The Heart of Baltimore campaign has provided an opportunity for caregivers and organizers to speak to over 4,000 health care workers. The campaign is spearheaded by 1199 SEIU, Maryland’s largest and fastest-growing health care union.
