Contractors interested in being part of the Westphalia Project have their opportunity to learn more about the plan at a July 11 open house.
The Westphalia Project will be a mixed-use development in Upper Marlboro on Westphalia Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. Mirinda Jackson, minority business enterprise compliance manager says information will be provided at the open house about how to get involved with the project.
“Developers will provide participants with information on the potential contracting opportunities,” Jackson said. “They’re just going to brief them on the project and what opportunities will be available.”
The development has been years in the making. The plan was originally approved by county council resolution in 2007. Since then it has run into several roadblocks. The first came at the hands of the project’s original developer, Sandler at Westphalia. That company defaulted on a loan it received from Wells Fargo to purchase and develop a property.
Then, a principal with Sandler, Daniel Colton, pleaded guilty to extortion due to his role in the Jack Johnson investigation.
The project is back up and running now though. Canadian-based developer Walton International has purchased the property for $29.5 million and is already creating plans to develop it according to reports. Walton’s schedule called for him to complete the project in three phases over a seven-year time period, according to the company’s interim financial report produced last month.
“When completed, it is anticipated that the project will provide approximately 66 single family homes, 779 townhomes, 884 rental apartments, 533,759 square feet of retail space, 2,240,000 square feet of office space and 600 hotel rooms,” the report said.
The open house will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Prince George’s Community College Westphalia Training Center. Those interested must RSVP with Jackson by July 6.
