The Morgan State University Bears men’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament after beating Savannah State, 64-61, in overtime in the opening round of the tournament on March 14 in Norfolk, Va..
Morgan State is currently on a seven-game winning streak, winning 10 of its last 11 games.
The Bears leaned on junior guard Justin Black; trailing 53-49 with less than two minutes remaining, Black nailed a three-pointer to cut the Savannah State lead to just one point. When Savannah State responded with a two-point shot, Black came right back and hit another three-pointer to tie the game at 55 to send the game into overtime. Morgan State thereafter took the lead for good and held Savannah State off for the win.
Black finished the game with a game-high 20 points, while junior center Ian Chiles added 14 for Morgan State; junior forward Anthony Hubbard added 13 points for the Bears and senior forward DeWayne Jackson followed with 11 points.
The Bears will face Bethune-Cookman in the semifinals on March 15. Victory in that matchup would advance the Bears to the MEAC finals where they would face the winner of the North Carolina A&T vs. Delaware State semifinals game.
