Winston Salem Routs Bowie State

The Bowie State University Bulldogs lost their second straight game, suffering a blowout 56-21 loss at the hands of the Winston Salem State University Rams on Oct. 5 in Winston Salem, N.C.

The Rams proved why they’re currently ranked among the top 20 in NCAA Division II football as they rolled off 50 unanswered points. Bowie State led 7-6 early in the first quarter, but Winston Salem took a 13-7 lead by the second quarter and extended it to 20-7 by halftime. The Rams then went on a scoring frenzy, piling up points and eventually led 56-7 early in the fourth quarter. Bowie State scored 14 meaningless points late in the fourth quarter.

“We had a rhythm in the first half, didn't finish some drives, made some mistakes and got behind and you can't do that against a good football team,” said Bulldogs head coach Damon Wilson.

Bulldogs junior quarterback Trevon Bennett completed 14 of 28 passes for 123 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Winston Salem junior quarterback Rudy Johnson completed 20 of 36 passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns.

Junior running back Keith Brown led Bowie State with 73 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Johnson led Winston Salem (4-1) with 73 rushing yards of his own, including two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs (2-3) will face Chowan University on Oct. 12, at Bowie State’s homecoming weekend.
