City College’s George Petrides Gains 250th Win

It didn’t take long for the City College Knights to bounce back from their first loss of the season at the hands of the Dunbar Poets last week. The Knights still remain near the top of the Baltimore’s high school football standings after a 20-14 overtime win over Mervo on Oct. 17.

Not only did the win push City to a 6-1 overall record (4-1 against Baltimore opponents), but it also marked the 250th career win for longtime Knights head coach George Petrides.

“It means I’ve been here a long time,” Petrides said of the win to reporters after the game.

“I’ve appreciated every moment of it. I have loved coaching football at City College and working with these young men. You couldn’t ask for a better life,” he said.

Petrides’ 250 wins are the most of any active coach in Baltimore and is second in Maryland only to Good Counsel head coach Bob Millow, who has 380 wins.

But Petrides’ 250th win didn’t come easy. The Knights had to overcome a 14-point deficit and their offense didn’t even score a point until the final minute of the game. That’s when City exploded with 14 unanswered points. After scoring two points by forcing a safety, City ran a kick back 55 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 14-8. They then tied the game with a touchdown run not long after.

In overtime, City quarterback Troy Robinson drove the field and scored a game-winning 1-yard touchdown. Robinson told reporters after the game he wasn’t aware of this being Petrides’ 250th win but said he’s happy to be the one who scored the game-winning touchdown in his coach’s milestone victory.

“He’s an excellent coach,” Robinson said. “He’s been coaching at City for a long time and he’s been winning for a long time and today just showed the type of coach he is and the type of teams he creates. Even though we didn’t know it was his 250th win, we did it for him, so congratulations to Coach Petrides.”
