Douglass maintained its third place position in the Baltimore City Division I standings but also secured a playoff berth with it’s narrow win over division opponent Mervo, 20-14, on Nov. 2 in Baltimore, Md.
Douglass (7-3 overall) trails only Dunbar and Edmondson Westside in the city standings and has earned a trip to the Maryland state playoffs. Such opportunity, however, was nearly lost when Mervo jumped out to an early lead.
Mervo took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter after running back Tyreke Rudolph scored a 19-yard touchdown. But Douglass responded in the second quarter when quarterback Brandon Oliver rushed for his own 23-yard touchdown, tying the game at 8-8 after a successful two-point conversion.
Douglass took a 14-8 lead after halftime when Oliver tossed a 47-yard touchdown pass to receiver Shaquille Woodland-Hunt. But Mervo wouldn’t go away, tying the game again with a 75-yard touchdown run by Rudolph.
A scoreless fourth quarter sent the game into overtime, where Oliver made the play of the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass to receiver Dontrell Kelly.
Douglass heads to the state playoff tournament for the second time in three years, bouncing back from a dreadful season last year, when they finished with a 3-7 record.
